Gymnasts from schools around Bath have had competition success at Baskervilles School of Gymnastics first ever Public Schools Competition. The competition was held at Monkton Prep School on Friday 5th May, and saw 70 children take part.
Teams competed from King Edward’s School, Monkton Prep School and Royal High School, with Moorlands Schools Federation also invited as guests, following their success at the Bath and Keynsham Schools Competition, which took place in February this year.
Each team taking part on the day comprised of five gymnasts, who each competed on floor and vault, with the four highest scores on each piece of apparatus contributing to the final team score.
Split over two levels, the Year 3 and 4 Competition had a total of nine teams competing in the Level 1 Competition, with six teams taking part in the Level 2 Competition.
In the Level 1 Competition, King Edward’s School A Team took gold on floor, with King Edward’s School B Team earning gold on vault. Overall, King Edward’s School A Team placed 3rd, Monkton Prep School placed 2nd with a score of 66.30, and the King Edwards School B Team came 1st, with an impressive score of 67.70 out of 80.00. Livi Lewis of King Edwards School was crowned the overall individual winner of the Level 1 competition, with a score of 18.30.
The Level 2 competition saw some tough competition for the teams taking part. On floor, gymnasts Tahlia Wyatt of Moorlands Schools Federation, Toby Hales of King Edward’s School, and Tilly Kennard and Isla Mills from Royal High School all scored a perfect 10.00. Overall, King Edward’s School A Team placed 3rd, Moorlands Schools Federation A Team placed 2nd and the team from Royal High School took the gold position. Isla Mills from Royal High School won the overall individual gold medal with a score of 19.80 out of 20.00, with Tahlia Wyatt from Moorlands Schools Federation following closely behind with a score of 19.70.
In the afternoon, the Year 5 and 6 gymnasts took to the competition floor, with a total of five teams over the two levels.
In the Level 1 competition, all the teams performed consistently, with Monkton Prep School B Team taking 3rd place on the floor and vault, Monkton Prep School A Team taking 2nd, and King Edward’s School 1st. Sophie Parnell of Monkton Prep School was crowned the overall winner.
The Level 2 competition saw a high standard of gymnastics with many gymnasts scoring 9.00 or more out of 10.00 on both pieces of apparatus. The team from Monkton Prep School managed to bag gold on vault, whilst the team from King Edward’s School took gold on floor. Overall, the team from King Edward’s School placed 1st. Sophie Franklin-Adams from King Edward’s School took home the overall individual gold medal.
Event organiser Francesca Ince explained, “I was extremely pleased with how the competition went. It was our first year running the event and I would like to thank Monkton Prep for hosting. We are looking forward to organising the same competition next year and hope to invite even more schools and gymnasts to take part”.
Emma Pike from Monkton Prep School enthused, “a huge thank you to your team for the fantastic competition. You have such a great team to work it and the girls and boys loved it. I don’t think they will ever receive so many medals in one competition again. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into this”.
