Baskerville’s Boys impress at Somerset Championships.

The annual Somerset Floor and Vault Championships took place at Baskerville’s School of Gymnastics on 6th October 2011.  Baskerville’s entered 26 competitors each competing in one of four age groups. All the gymnasts had worked very hard to prepare for the competition and were rewarded by winning 24 medals.

The youngest age group was the Under 8’s. 6-year-old Cayden Amollo had a fantastic competition performing an excellent Floor routine and two brilliant Vaults to win the overall gold medal, the Floor gold and Vault gold. Alex Weimar (8) also had a great competition and really excelled on Vault, winning the overall silver medal. Winning the overall bronze medal was Oliver Snook (6). Olly was consistently impressive finishing in 3rd place on each apparatus. Close behind in 4th was Almos Juhasz (8) who gave a very neat Floor routine. In 5th overall was Sam Meharg (8) competing in his first competition – he performed very well throughout. Lewis Baldwin (8) also had a good day, finishing in overall 6th place which included a super 2nd vault. Magor Juhasz (6) had a good competition, finishing in 7th place – he was consistently good on both apparatus. Close behind in 8th was Conor Luckett (8) who gave a very strong Vault where he came 4th. Also competing in his first competition was Robbie Nesbit (7) who finished in 9th overall. Robbie performed on both apparatus very well and had a particularly neat Floor routine. Simon Cheung, 6, demonstrated neat and tidy routines and came in 10th place overall.

In the Under 10′s competition, Baskerville’s had a wealth of competitors who all put in every effort to perform their routines to the very best of their ability. Denis Skryabin (10) had a fantastic day winning the overall gold medal and finishing 2nd on both Floor and Vault. Winning the overall bronze medal was Charlie Taylor, 8. Charlie gave an impressive Floor routine but it was on Vault that he really excelled, winning the Vault gold medal. In overall 4th place was Joe Blethyn (10). Joe gave a neat Floor routine and performed a complicated Vault. Robbie Andrews, 9, had a very good competition to finish in overall 5th. Robbie performed an excellent Floor routine and had a strong Vault. Henry Brooker (8) was 6th overall and performed consistently well over each apparatus. Pavlo Cotis (10) came 7th overall and his highlight was the Vault where he came 6th. Zach Weeks had an impressive competition performing a difficult Floor routine and an exceptional 2nd Vault to finish in overall 8th place.

The Under 12′s competition was a closely fought race for medals between 3 gymnasts from Baskerville’s. James Conibere (11) was triumphant winning the overall gold medal. He really excelled on each apparatus and also won the Floor gold. Cameron Sinden (11) performed complicated routines and difficult Vaults to win the overall silver medal. Harry Leakey (11) had an excellent Vault for which he won the gold medal. Harry’s impressive performance also won him the overall bronze medal.

The Under 14′s competition was another closely fought race between Wilson Skyrme (13) and Jacob Prescott (14), both from Baskerville’s. Jacob had a fantastic competition winning the overall gold medal and also winning the Floor gold. Wilson also had a very good competition winning the overall silver medal and winning the gold medal on the Vault.

The final competition was for the over 14′s. The overall competition was won by Baskerville’s Joe Edwards (15) who had an excellent competition not only winning the overall prize but also the individual golds on Floor and Vault. The Vault gold was shared with Anders Rees (15) who competed very well, also winning the overall silver medal. The overall bronze medal was shared between two gymnasts, Jamie Law and Adam Parker, both 15. Both gymnasts had good competitions performing well on each apparatus.

It was a very successful day for all the gymnasts from Baskerville’s not only for those who won medals but also for those competing for the first time, competing new moves or perfecting existing routines. Many of the gymnasts will now look forward to representing Somerset at the Intercounties Floor and Vault competition in November.
